But not everyone lives in a sprawling 5,000 sq. ft. ranch home. For those of us that live in older homes closer to downtown, or in apartments, the segmented nature of a lot of spaces in Wichita can be tricky to furnish and decorate. This means that it can also be tough to welcome friends and family if you're short on seats and table space. Wondering how you can possibly fit all of your friends in your living room for the big game? All of your family for your new baby? Don't worry! Wichita Furniture is here to help maximize that room.

Planning to entertain

One of the easiest ways to maximize space is to start thinking up, not out. The walls of your room are prime real estate to get stuff up off of the floor and tables. Add wall-mounted shelves to store books and nick-nacks. Use a coat rack and shoe rack to clear out some closet space. Take a look around the room and identify clutter that you don't use on a daily basis. All of that stuff can really start to compress a room and clearing out unnecessary decor can really help to make a room feel more open. If you're hosting more than a couple of friends it's also a good idea to make sure there's space in other rooms for guests to spread out and talk. Run through any other rooms that might be used and focus again on those rare-used clutter items.

Furniture selection

It's important to be mindful of your space when selecting furniture for your new home. While we all love a huge comfy reclining loveseat, will that take up too much room? It might be a good idea to consider a more modern sofa and loveseat set. Something with narrower arms and back cushions with fitted instead of overfilled pillows can make more of a difference than you think! Hosting a party without a meal? Take a look at getting a table with a removeable leaf so there's more room to stand around the table for snacks.

Arranging furniture for entertaining

While we generally think that it's best to push furniture as far back against the walls as possible to maximize standing room, that might not always be the best solution. Consider traffic flow through the room based on the amount of space you have. Worried that guests might congregate in the middle of the living room and block access to the dining room or kitchen? Pull the sofa out away from the wall so that guests can walk behind it to get from room to room. Plus, if people will be hanging out on the couch, it's best to keep seating close to create a more intimate space. That'll save people from needing to lean in to keep up with the conversation. Think about other items that can be used for seating too... Have an extra coffee or end table that's sturdy enough to sit on? Throw a decorative pillow on it or the floor to make an extra seat.

Next, think about traffic flow for food and drinks. Try to keep both separated if you can to prevent traffic jams. If all of the snacks and beverages are on one table you could end up with crowding and guests will tend to congregate wherever they can find refreshments. Try not to overdo it on choices either. Chances are that you'll end up with a bunch of barely-touched food, and each choice takes up more space on the table. Keep some backup food in the fridge, and bring out more when what you've served starts to get low. Need more space for mixers or sodas? Throw some ice in the sink and use it as a cooler!

Watching the game or a movie?

While this requires a dedicated room, it's still super easy to set up your very own home theater. With the theater-oriented seating we carry, you can give your guests the big theater feel without breaking the bank. Power reclining sofas with built-in cup holders and wireless chargers are perfect! Don't have space for a large TV stand or entertainment center? Wall-mounting your TV or looking into a ceiling-mounted projector can free up a ton of space, and helps lend even more to the theater feel.

If you're in one of Wichita's smaller spaces, don't worry! It's still totally possible to enjoy entertaining friends and family without feeling cramped or breaking the bank. Stop by Wichita Furniture today and let one of our Design Experts help lay out the perfect space!

urn:store:1:blog:post:37 https://wichitafurniture.com/what-to-know-about-adjustable-beds What to Know about Adjustable Beds
If you haven't had the chance to try an adjustable base, you're not alone! Although they've been around for decades, they've only recently started getting popular outside of the medical community. And just like in a hospital, there are legitimate health benefits to using one, better sleep notwithstanding.

So what is it?

At the most basic level, it's just a replacement for the foundation of your bed that moves. Because there are a variety of manufacturers with different feature sets, we'll just focus on the simplest features - typically raising the head and feet of the mattress.

Although more like a adjustable pool lounger than a bed, they've been used as far back as Ancient Rome. An electric adjustable bed more similar to what we know today was invented by an American surgeon in the early 1900s.

Like we mentioned earlier, adjustable beds found their first use in medicine, but those days are long-past now and they're becoming increasingly common in the residential space. Since they can be adjusted into a variety of positions, they can help with a myriad of sleep issues, pain, snoring, and even just providing a more comfortable position. The other great part - they work with just about any mattress (just be sure to get a base that's the same size as your mattress)!

Cool! So what is right for me?

This is where the topic gets a little trickier... What's right for one person may not be for the next as our sleep styles and comfort are entirely subjective. Nearly every adjustable base will include a rising head section to help lift the upper part of the body. This is great if your primary concern is being able to more comfortably read or watch TV in bed. No more having to stack a mountain of pillows or crane your neck to get a good view!

Getting more advanced, many bases also offer lifts for the legs and feet. The combination of lifting the extremeties helps increase blood flow and open airways, making a major difference for snorers. Other bases will include a vibrating massage feature, temperature and heartbeat monitoring, and can even connect to and be controlled by smartphone apps.

Sleeping on a split-mattress king? There's bases for that! Taking the subjectivity point into consideration, not everyone will want to share their ideal sleeping position with someone else. Why not have the option to adjust both sides of the bed independently?

So what beds do they work with?

Here's the next cool part... Just about any modern bed can work with an adjustable base. The bases are made to fit traditional box spring dimensions, so they'll either sit directly on top of the existing bed platform or have adjustable-length legs to fit in the mattress footprint. Easy!

And don't worry, we consider an adjustable base part of our ideal sleep solution so we have quite a few functioning bases available to try! How to Get the Most from Your New Bed
You've had your old innerspring mattress for over a decade and it's starting to show its age. You're in the market for a new mattress, but not sure if that's all you need.

Well, things have changed quite a bit in the last 10 years, but good news: We want to make sure you're totally satisfied with that new mattress so read on for a few recommendations worth considering.

Love Your Mattress Plans

Although our Sleep Experts do our best to make sure that your new mattress is the perfect fit before you leave the store, occasionally it turns out that you needed something softer or firmer after you've had a few months to sleep on it.

That's where our Love Your Mattress plans come in. Not only do they include additional pieces to help complete your purchase (we'll get into that more below), but you can also rest assured that if you don't love your new mattress, you can exchange it for up to 18 months! New mattress cost more than the original? No problem, just pay the difference!

The Basics

Mattress Protectors

At a bare minimum, it's always a good idea to cover your new mattress with a mattress protector. This helps keep the fabric and fill clean and will prevent your mattress from picking up odors and stains. Some of us sleep hot... Without a mattress protector, that sweat, the dirt of the day, oils from skin, etc., all grind themselves into the fibers of your mattress while you sleep. Like to enjoy the odd snack or beverage in bed? A mattress protector is a lifesaver in case of an accidental spill.

Pillows

What you rest your head on has come a long way in recent years too, with major mattress manufacturers using the same types of technology in pillows. More breathable with different firmnesses and cuts for various sleeping positions, they're a far cry from the down pillow you might have grown up with. Sleeping on an old worn-out pillow can also cause neck and spine issues, leading to lower-quality sleep and potential health issues.

Sheets

You don't want to skimp on the sheets. That new mattress protector is awesome, but they aren't made to be slept on directly. The right sheets don't just make your bed more comfortable, but they can also help keep you cooler and dryer.

Adjustable Bases

An adjustable base is an experience that can't be fully described... You just have to try it! Gone are the days of sleeping flat on your back, side or stomach. Adjustable bases are for more than just general comfort. They can help alleviate snoring, reduce hearburn, help with acid reflux, and more! Like to watch TV in bed too? No need to stack a bunch of pillows to try to get your head elevated. Just tilt your adjustable base!

Decoration

Your bed is the centerpiece of your bedroom. With such an investment, it's worth drawing as much attention to it as possible! A few complimentary accent pieces to consider are:

Quilts

Duvets and coverlets

Comforters

Accent pillows

Decorative and functional blankets

YOU!

And finally, the last, but most important part is... YOU! A mattress is a uniquely personal choice. The average person spends a third of their life sleeping. Take your time to be sure that your new mattress is the best fit, and be sure to let the Sleep Experts at Wichita Furniture help you through the buying process!
urn:store:1:blog:post:35 https://wichitafurniture.com/what-to-know-about-mattress-sizes What to Know about Mattress Sizes
So it's finally time to upgrade that old worn out bedroom set. You're thinking "my mattress isn't that bad. Maybe I'll just keep it..."

If you just bought that bad boy a couple of years ago, then depending on the mattress you bought you might be right. But if it's over seven years old, then it's probably time to start looking at replacing it. After all, the average person spends a third of their life sleeping. Getting a good night's sleep starts with the right mattress, and can have profound impacts on a variety of aspects of a person's health.

You've found a style of bed you like, but you happen to have a little more space in your bedroom to fill so you're wondering just what size of mattress do I need?

Hopefully the guide below helps!

What size do I really need?

Let's start small and work our way up. It's worth knowing that the average person moves a lot in his or her sleep... over 40 times a night, including a bunch of full body turns. With that kind of movement you want to be sure that you and anyone you're sharing the bed with have enough space to move. Let's take a look at sizes.

Twin - 39" x 75"

Twin mattresses are great for single, small sleepers. Think a child or college student in a dorm room where space is at a premium. Twins can make a great transition bed size for a child that's moving out of a crib, and low profile floor beds are easy for toddlers to climb in and out of.

Full - 54" x 75"

Full mattresses are the same length as a twin, but 15" wider. This is an even better size for a single sleeper, but it gets pretty cramped for two people. 27" per person is tight, especially when you start accounting for all that movement we were talking about earlier. If you're an adult who sleeps alone and you have the space, you'll be much happier in the long run with a full.

Queen - 60" x 80"

Queen mattresses are the bare minimum size recommended for sleeping with partners. 30" of space per person is much more reasonable for smaller couples, and that extra length never hurts for people who like to stretch out. Just keep in mind that the sleeping width per person is still smaller than what an individual would have with a twin. Queens are also great for single sleepers who need space to spread out!

King - 76" x 80"

Kings are the gold standard for families with kids or pets. With more than enough space for an adult couple AND that sick kiddo or clingy pet, a king can't be beat for versatility. Just keep in mind that kings require a lot of real estate and won't work as well in smaller bedrooms. Since a king is the width of two twin mattresses, they also have the option of allowing two different sleeping profiles with the right adjustable base. Twin XL mattresses are an extra 5" long so two can be placed side-by-side to create the same size as a traditional king, but then both sides can be separated to allow for greater adjustment range and options in mattress firmness.

California King - 72" x 84"

California kings are ideal for the tallest couples. You may lose 4" on the sides, but it adds 4" to the length. That tradeoff can certainly be worth it if that length matters more than the width.

I think I've found the one for me

That's great! The size is the first step in the mattress buying process. From there it's much easier to select a bed (and bedroom set if you're needing other pieces too). Now it's time to lie down and try them out! Finding the perfect fit is a personal experience that's unique to each person's comfort level and sleep style. The good news is that our Sleep Experts are here to help! Stop by today to learn more!
urn:store:1:blog:post:34 https://wichitafurniture.com/outdoor-fall-decorating-for-all-2 Outdoor Fall Decorating for All
No matter what that cousin from California says, one of the best parts about living in Kansas is getting to experience our oftentimes wild seasonal changes. Even though it may not feel quite like fall yet, leaves are starting to drop, grass is browning, and I'm leaving the house with a light jacket most mornings... But the most obvious sign that we're out of summer is the annual resurgence of the pumpkin. Wichita has a myriad of pumpkin and gourd farms on the outskirts of town, and those can be one of the best places to start the journey of refreshing your home for the perfect autumn feel. Colors like gold, orange, and natural tones of leather and wood help to bring the vibes of the great outdoors inside. Decorating for Halloween is always a blast, but some decor choices can last through Thanksgiving and even later if chosen with longevity and versatility in mind.

The easiest place to start is with the outtermost parts of your home, and finding ways to bring the changing foliage closer to the front door. Instead of sticking with bright green and vibrant plants, pastel-colored mums with small bales of straw and wicker baskets help provide a more refined feel. You can never go wrong with some dried corn cobs and artficial pumpkins (feel free to use real pumpkins too, just be prepared to swap them out if/when they start rotting).

If you have any outdoor seating arrangements, autumn-themed throw pillows and outdoor blankets can make a stunning statement. Stick with fall colors and patterns here - gold and orange leaves, forest green and orange plaids, neutral white woods, etc. Spruce things up a bit too with bundles of dried corn stocks and twigs. Bring it all together with a touch of light from outdoor lanterns!

But above all else, make sure that whatever decor you choose is something that YOU like. After all, decorating is fun! At least... we think so!

Looking for a little more inspiration or interested in speaking with one of our design experts? Follow these 5 tips and you’ll be on your way to a productive year!

Location, Location, Location

The key to finding a great study spot is understanding your own needs. Do you prefer to work in a quiet space or do you need little background noise? A study space doesn’t have to require an entire room; just find a nook or corner away from distractions and make the most of the space you have! Try to choose a spot with an interesting backdrop so you won’t have to spend your day staring at a white wall. Don’t forget to check the area for easily accessible outlets and a solid WiFi connection!

Use Functional Furniture

Maximize your space by choosing functional furniture. A desk with extra storage is an easy way to store books and files. Remember, start by utilizing what you already have. Consider repurposing a decorative basket into a trash can, or repaint an old bookshelf to give it a fresh style. Investing in a comfortable chair with proper support will allow you to work longer without the distraction of aches and pains. Thankfully, you won’t have to compromise style to find function.

Stay Organized

A cluttered desk will leaving you feeling overwhelmed, but an organized space promotes productivity. Start by decluttering and labeling everything. There are plenty of stylish storage options to choose from like printed folders, fabric bins, and floating shelves. Dedicate some time to organize the devices on your desk. Untangling the web of chords will clear up valuable space and make the items you need more accessible. This can be accomplished by using cord covers, desk grommets, cord winders, or other office organization supplies.

Show Your Style

It’s time to let your personal style shine through! The fun part of creating your study space is decorating it. Choose a theme, such as modern glam, traditional, or boho chic, and decide on a color scheme. It is best to stick to only a couple of colors to maintain a calming atmosphere. Keep in mind that the style of your office should complement the rest of your home decor. Start by adding purposeful decor: a metallic clock, trendy calendar, or sleek pen holder. A small plant will provide life and a pop of color for your desk. Fill a few picture frames with family photos and motivational quotes to keep you smiling. Finish up by tying your space together with a rug!

TIP: When decorating a small space, choose pieces that are taller, not wider.

Light It Up

The final step in completing this project is determining the appropriate lighting. If your study area is low on sunlight, or if you tend to study into the wee hours of the night, you’ll need to add a floor or desk lamp. Be cautious of allowing too much light, which can create a glare on your screens and cause eye strain. An adjustable lamp is a great way to add style and functionality.

This time of year can be overwhelming and exhausting, but if you create a space you enjoy spending time in, you’ll be ready to take on whatever this year brings!

Products shown in photos:

Baraga Desk

Baraga Desk Chair

Upholstered Office Chair

Viganni Desk

Viganni File Cabinet

Mirimyn Desk

Bertmond Desk

Fullinfurst Desk with Hutch

Faux Leather Office Chair

Efharis 3 Piece Wall Shelf Set

Luxenford Desk

Luxenford Credenza with Hutch

Jazmin Wall Clock

Jai Rug

Marilee Gold Floor Lamp

Kyron Desk Lamp

Marilu Table Lamp

Jaak Floor Lamp

urn:store:1:blog:post:27 https://wichitafurniture.com/kids-bedroom-decorating-tips Decorating Tips for Kids’ Bedrooms
For kids, their room is an expression of their interests and personality. For parents, it’s often a place that’s a struggle to keep neat and clutter-free! Here are kids’ bedroom decorating tips for creating a fun, yet functional, space.

Choose Furniture Designed to Save Space

Floor space in a kids’ room is usually at a premium, especially if it’s shared. Thankfully, there are many kids’ furniture options to help you make the most of every square inch. When choosing a bed, look for storage features like bookcase headboards and integrated underbed drawers. If you sometimes need extra sleep space, many kids’ beds are available with a large underbed drawer that doubles for storage or a trundle.

For shared rooms, bunk and loft beds are the ultimate space-savers. There are even corner models that can sleep three or four! The open space beneath a loft can be used to house a desk, dresser, or left open for more play space.

Encourage Kids to Make the Space Their Own

Let your child’s personality shine through by incorporating his or her own handiwork into the decor.

Create a gallery wall by framing your child’s favorite masterpieces and photos, or use inexpensive acrylic frames to easily switch them in and out. For a colorful, ever-changing room border, you can clip photos and drawings to a wire or sturdy string hung along the wall.

Peel-and-stick cork board is easy to use, inexpensive, and can be cut into fun shapes. Mount it on the wall for plenty of pin-up space for pictures (and reminder notes from mom and dad!) Chalkboard paint turns a plain section of wall into an interactive surface for doodles, games and notes.

Keep Up with Kids’ Interests with Decals

Many kids go through phases—for months a particular movie or cartoon character is all they can talk about, then suddenly it’s dinosaurs or horses! Removable wall decals are an inexpensive way to incorporate your child’s (current) favorite thing into his or her room decor without committing to more permanent updates. Removable wall transfers are also an easy way to periodically change up colors and patterns, and update the room as kids age.

Showcase Their Collections

Kids love to collect things: rocks, seashells, dolls, model cars, sports memorabilia, you name it. Only trouble is, these treasures can quickly turn into clutter if they’re not stored or displayed.

Shadowboxes, box shelves and cube shelving units are perfect ways to display your child’s prized possessions. If the collection is one that they play with or like to riffle through, a storage unit with drawers or stackable totes is just the ticket.

Neutral = Versatile

Kids’ tastes can change quickly, especially as they age. That hot pink decor your daughter begged for at age 10 might not be so welcome when she’s a teen.

If you want to minimize the number of times you paint, go with neutral wall colors, or colors that can complement a range of bedding and accessory colors. Soothing blues, grays and greens have the added advantage of helping kids relax and wind down before bedtime.

Incorporate your child’s current favorite colors through bedding, window treatments and area rugs. Patterns will add extra “pop.”

Want More Decorating Ideas?

Follow us on Facebook for decorating ideas, decor trends, and the latest Wichita Furniture deals. Here are eight small living room decorating ideas that will create the illusion of added space and make the most of every square inch.

Keep Your Cool

In choosing your room color scheme, keep in mind that cool colors (blue or green undertones) create a feeling of openness and lightness, making a room appear larger, while warm colors (brown, red, orange or yellow undertones) make a room feel cozy and comfortable, but smaller.

A cool neutral color palette (such as white or gray) is a perfect match for a small living room. Accented with pops of bright color, light neutral walls and upholstery will make the room appear airy and larger. If you have dark flooring, even adding a light colored area rug over it will make a difference.

Can you use a bold or dark color palette in a small living room? Of course, and there is something to be said for making a statement with a dramatic room. Just know that it will make the room appear smaller. You might counterbalance this by choosing especially sleek furnishings, or by leaving windows uncovered to let in light. Do also use semigloss or satin finish paint, which will reflect light in the room.

Heads Up

When the horizontal space in the room is limited, drawing the eye upward opens things up. This is especially effective if your living room has a high ceiling. Make the most of vertical space with a grouping of photos or artwork that extends up beyond eye level. Another easy tip? Use floor-to-ceiling drapes rather than (or over) horizontal blinds. You can even hang the drapes just above the windows to create the illusion of added height.

House of Mirrors

Mirrors are nearly magical in their ability to make a room appear larger. They reflect light and create the illusion of added depth. Try using a mirror (or grouping of three mirrors) as a focal point. For maximum effect, place it behind a light source. You can also position a mirror on the wall directly opposite a window—it will reflect back the view and give the illusion of another window!

Lighten Up

A well-lit room appears light and airy. However, in a small room you’re not likely to have a lot of table space for lamps. Go for hanging pendant lights instead (they’ll draw the eye up). Swing-arm wall lamps beside your sofa or favorite reading chair will free up valuable space on your end tables, or eliminate the need for them if space is tight.

Make Use of Multi-Taskers

In a small room, it’s hard to justify furnishings that aren’t functional. Thankfully, you have plenty of pieces to choose from that combine style with substance. As Americans have downsized to smaller homes in recent years, furniture makers have met the demand with multi-tasking furniture that makes the most of every square inch.

In place of a standard coffee table, opt for a coffee table with incorporated storage. Or, go with an ottoman that does triple-duty for seating, storage, and serving. Many sofas are now available with storage beneath.

Need more flexibility in your space? You might try nesting tables instead of end tables, which can be grouped together or separately whenever you need more table space. Or how about a wheeled serving cart or bar cart as a side table? Two end tables or drum tables placed side-by-side can take the place of a coffee table, and are more easily moved when you need to open up the space.

Bye-Bye Bulk

Bulky furniture pieces, like an overstuffed sofa, big recliner or heavy wooden table, can quickly make a small room feel crowded. Instead, choose smaller-scale furniture to fit the room. Chairs and sofas with exposed wood legs give a feeling of lightness. Sleek metal and glass tables have the same effect. Low backs on the upholstered pieces draw the eye up to the vertical space above.

Even if these streamlined pieces take up the same footprint as their bulky counterparts, they don’t look as if they do!

Cutting Corners

In a small room, corners are your friend. Put those underutilized spaces to work with shelving units, tables, bookcases, desks and TV stands that are specially designed to fit into the corner. A small-scale corner sectional can be a smart and stylish seating option when space is at a premium.

“Float” Your Furniture

This is a tried-and-true home staging tip used to make rooms appear larger. Try placing your furniture out from the wall rather than tightly against it. This may seem counter-intuitive, but having open space behind the furniture creates the illusion of added volume.

Want More Decorating Ideas?

Follow us on Facebook for decorating ideas, decor trends, and the latest Wichita Furniture deals. While most patio products are made to remain outside, the approaching Kansas winter weather could be harmful to your outdoor furniture. Taking the steps now to carefully store your patio furniture for the winter will not only prolong the life of your investment, it’ll also simplify yours come next spring.

To keep your outdoor furniture lasting a long time, store everything either in a shed, dry storage space, under a tarp or indoors. If you do use a tarp, make sure it’s tied down securely and leave a gap at the bottom to promote circulation. However, before putting furniture away, it’s important to thoroughly clean and repair all outdoor furniture. Here is a general breakdown on how to care for and store your patio furniture depending on the type of material it's made of.

Wood Furniture

All outdoor furniture made from wood should have a protective sealant applied to it to protect it from any moisture. During the winter, moisture can freeze inside the wood and cause it to crack. Simply putting a cover over it will not work because wood can absorb moisture from the air. It’s best to both seal and cover. If the wood is painted, restore it with a fresh coat of paint. Give it a good wash with a water-detergent-bleach solution and a mildly abrasive sponge. Rinse and let it completely dry before storing.

Plastic Furniture

Plastic outdoor furniture does not absorb moisture like wood does but frigid winter temperatures tend to make plastic brittle enough that it will crack. It’s best to store plastic furniture indoors or in an area where it won’t drop below freezing. Before storing it away, wash thoroughly with a detergent solution and rinse.

Metal Furniture

Metal furniture easily rusts with snow and freezing rain. When rust forms, it weakens the metal and causes it to start breaking down. Before storing it, look for any rust spots and treat it with a rust-neutralizing primer. Smooth the area and then apply a spray paint that matches the original surface. For extra protection, add a coat of automotive wax. It’s best to bring this type of patio furniture indoors, not only for the winter but when it rains as well.

Wicker Furniture

Wicker furniture comes with a lot of nooks and crannies. It’s important to first brush the surface with a bleach and water solution and remove any mildew. Then gently rinse off with a fine spray and let dry thoroughly. Freshen it up with a spray paint and apply a moisture repellent to the feet and legs where the grain may be exposed. When storing wicker furniture for the winter, keep them in a dry place and on top of blocks to keep the feet off the floor.

Cushions & Fabrics

Cushion fabrics can easily be damaged by the freezing and thawing that occurs during the winter. The stuffing inside the cushions can also grow mold and mildew. First, vacuum your cushions and umbrella then wash them with a bleach-detergent mix (one cup bleach to a gallon water, with a squirt of detergent). For cotton fabrics, just use soap and water.

For storage, it’s best to keep cushions in a shed or a storage box and bring them indoors when it rains. If you are storing them in an area where there is a potential for rodents, consider setting traps and wrapping the cushions for extra protection. Keep a tarp over them to stop dust from accumulating.
urn:store:1:blog:post:24 https://wichitafurniture.com/decorating-with-mixed-patterns Decorating With Mixed Patterns
Mixing stripes with plaids used to be a no-no...sort of like wearing white after Labor Day. But just as fashion rules have relaxed, so too have home decorating do’s and don’ts. Mixing patterns is chic!

Still, there are some guidelines for decorating with mixed patterns. Do it well, and you add terrific visual interest to your space. Do it without thought, and the results can be overly busy and distracting. Here are some tips for decorating with mixed patterns.

The Rule of (at Least) Three

The “Rule of Three” is a principle used in many aspects of decorating. There is just something visually pleasing about groupings of odd numbers, especially when you’re trying to avoid looking “matchy.” Three is the minimum number of patterns you should use—you can use more, but with each addition, take care that the combination doesn’t become too busy.

Here are some ideas for choosing and combining three patterns:

Choose the largest scale pattern first as the anchor, then choose the other two to complement it.

Try a 60/30/10 ratio. Go with 60% of your main pattern, 30% of a second pattern, and 10% of a third pattern as an accent.

If you’re using an extremely bold or splashy print for your main pattern, make the others more low-key so the combination won’t be too busy.

Think about the scale of the patterns as well as the shapes in order to create interest. You might mix a large floral pattern with a narrow stripe and a midsized check.

Choose patterns that are obviously different from one another, like a floral with plaid and paisley with stripes. This makes the combination look thoughtful and intentional.

Use Color as a Unifying Element

Shared colors make contrasting patterns look as though they belong together. Look for subtle accent colors in one pattern and bring them forward in another.

When choosing your patterns, stay within the same color intensity. Mixing a soft pastel floral with a bright primary color stripe or jewel-toned damask print will look jarring.

Give It a Rest

The eye, that is. Your patterns will “pop” when the eye has a place to rest, such as a neutral colored wall or solid colored upholstery. Balance out your prints with solid colors. Otherwise, the area may look too busy, and the patterns will lose their effectiveness.

Consider the Patterns Already in the Room

As you consider the prints you’d like to add, remember that your room may already contain patterns. Is there a bold striped pattern in the hardwood floor? How about a geometric pattern in the tile? Striped wainscoting? Take these into account when you’re creating your mix.

Easy Ways to Update Your Patterns

Decorative pillows are an inexpensive way to dip your toe into the pattern-mixing pool without diving into a complete room redo. Use them to add fresh visual interest to your living room. For the bedroom, many bedding sets do the pattern mixing for you by using complementary prints on a reversible comforter or in the pillow shams.

Want More Decorating Ideas?

Follow us on Facebook for decorating ideas, decor trends, and the latest Wichita Furniture deals. It not only needs to set the style tone for your home and send a warm welcome, but it’s a high-traffic area that needs to be organized and clutter-free. Here are five tips for creating a stylish, functional entryway.

Make a Great First Impression

You only get one chance, right? Your entryway should give an immediate sense of your personality and the style of your home. It’s the perfect place to showcase an eye-catching piece of a wall art, a beautifully painted accent chest or table, or a favorite collectible.

Since entryways are generally small, you can even use a paint color or wallpaper print you love that would be too difficult to incorporate into a larger room. Just make sure it still coordinates with the style and colors of the surrounding rooms to avoid a jarring transition.

Roll Out the (not necessarily red) Carpet

Use a runner as a stylish way to guide guests into the home. By “picking up” colors from your living or front room, a runner can help create a transition from one area to the next.

This rug also acts as a backup if wet or dirty shoes make it past the porch doormat, so make sure it can be easily cleaned. Set the runner far back enough that it won’t get caught under the front door, and anchor it with sturdy rug pads so it won’t get bunched underfoot and become a trip hazard.

Let There Be Light

Entering an unlit or dimly lit foyer is not only dreary, it’s unsafe. As soon as you walk in the door, you need to be able to see into the home. You also need sufficient light to see any needed items you keep near the door, such as your shoes or keys.

Shed some light on the situation with an overhead lighting fixture such as a pendant or chandelier. The bottom of the fixture should be about 7 feet from the floor—suspend it much higher and you lose the effect; hang it much lower and you make the room seem shorter. (Not to mention, there’s a risk of taller guests bumping their heads on their way in!)

If you have room in your entryway for hall or console table, you might opt for a table lamp. You’ll need a lamp with a slim base to fit the table and avoid intruding into the space. Wall sconces are another lighting possibility.

Friendly Function

Entryways must be functional as well as stylish. After all, they have people trooping in and out of them multiple times a day, encumbered with coats, backpacks, purses, bags, mail, etc. Often, these items don’t make it far past the front door! An entryway can become cluttered in a hurry without functional solutions.

This may be as simple as installing a row of wall hooks, or taking it a step further, a hall tree or entryway wall unit with cubbies or shelves if you need more storage. A coat tree with umbrella stand base is a great way to keep wet raingear away from interior flooring. If you want an entryway table, you can find a wide variety of console tables with incorporated storage beneath. Rather than leaving items out on open shelves, try woven storage baskets or decorative totes for a neater look.

If you have the space, an entryway bench or stool provides a much-appreciated place to sit and put on or remove shoes. Many entryway benches have built-in storage compartments, shelves or cubbies, so you get plenty of functional use for the footprint.

Don’t Have a Separate Foyer?

Even if your front door opens directly into the living room, many of these ideas can still be applied. Place your favorite decorative items where they can be immediately seen upon entering the home, in order to set the tone for your decor. Use a rug that’s a different color from your main flooring to help create the illusion of a separate area. A console table, bench or hall tree placed near the door will add style and function.

Want More Decorating Ideas?

Follow us on Facebook for decorating ideas, decor trends, and the latest Wichita Furniture deals. How you decorate will depend on your personal style and the size, height and shape of your mantel, but here are some ideas to try.

Bigger Is Better

Make a statement with one large wall art piece hung above the mantel or leaned against the wall. How big is big? Aim for a piece that is at least ⅔ the size of the mantel. This could be a piece of artwork, a wall sculpture, clock or mirror. A mirror works better if the mantel is on the low side. Too tall, and you won’t get the full effect of the reflected items—plus, you’ll be “cut off” at the head when looking into it.

Create a Gallery Wall

The open space above the mantel is prime real estate for creating a gallery wall. Keep things interesting by staggering the placements, hanging items both horizontally and vertically, and even mixing framed art and sculptural wall pieces.

A gallery wall works best if you aren’t placing items on the mantel shelf itself, and the surrounding wall space is clear. Otherwise, you risk the area looking overly cluttered. This look is especially striking in a minimalist space.

Dare to Be Different

When you think of mantel decorations, items like vases and candles probably come to mind. Those are great, but for some extra punch, try mixing things up. Nearly anything that is visually interesting will work: sculptures, natural elements, bottles, finials, etc. Small items (paperweight size) such as figurines tend to get lost on a large mantel, so choose items that can stand up to the space.

Your mantel groupings can be as eclectic as you like, but in order for them to appear harmonious instead of cluttered, the items should have some unifying element: theme, texture, color palette, etc.

When choosing items for your mantel, always keep safety in mind. Items can be knocked off a tall or shallow mantel and break. Don’t use flammable items if they are near or could come in contact with the heat.

Love Those Layers

Overlapping frames look amazing on a mantel, especially if you vary the sizes and orientations (horizontal, vertical). Complete the look with decorative items layered in front, such as vases, stacks of vintage books, or candlesticks.

Create Balanced Contrast

A classic arrangement for a mantel is an art piece in the center, flanked by matching candlesticks and/or vases on either end. However, you don’t always have to match, or even have the same number of items on either side—just so long as they are evenly balanced in “visual weight.” For a striking arrangement, try starting with taller objects on the ends, then sloping down to shorter ones near the center.

Want More Decorating Ideas?

Follow us on Facebook for decorating ideas, decor trends, and the latest Wichita Furniture deals. They’re extraordinarily versatile, setting the stage for any kind of decor. You can create nearly any atmosphere: minimalist and modern, understated and elegant, calming and comfortable. Nothing balances a space as well as neutrals.

There’s also a trick to decorating with neutrals. As with many things, the simpler and more effortless something looks, the more thought and skill are involved in creating it. Here are some tips for creating a neutral-toned decor.

Think Beyond Beige

Many people equate “neutral” with beige, but there are actually hundreds of neutral colors to explore! Some of the most popular neutrals today bring the colors of nature indoors, like rich, earthy deep browns and mineral tones like gray-greens and stone gray-blues.

Another popular neutral is “greige”—a combination of “gray” + “beige.” It has soothing neutrality of beige, but the depth of gray. It’s the perfect compromise when beige would look too warm for the room, but gray would look too stark. “Putty” is another popular neutral color that is similar to greige, but tends to incorporate more of the beige for a warmer look.

Consider Color Temperatures

Colors can either be “cool” or “warm,” and you need to consider these color temperatures when developing your room color palette. Cool colors (blue and green undertones) tend to make a room look lighter and larger, while warm colors (yellow, red and brown undertones) tend to make a space seem cozy and comfortable.

Balance and contrast are important. Use all cool neutrals (basic white, charcoal, black, steel, blue-gray), and your room can look stark and antiseptic instead of light and airy. Use all warm neutrals (beige, tan, chocolate brown, cream) and the room may look “same-y” and blah instead of comforting and cozy.

General rule of thumb? Combine neutrals of the same temperatures for your dominant color scheme, then accent with colors of the opposite temperature. More on that in a bit.

Go Dark

Did you know that neutral colors can be dark? Black, charcoal gray and dark brown can all be considered neutral. Espresso (a color that ranges from deep chocolate brown to nearly black) is a perennial favorite.

You can use dark neutrals to “ground” the lighter neutral tones in the room. It’s a classy combo and creates contrast. When pairing dark and light neutrals, it’s best to combine colors with the same undertones or color temperatures.

Enliven the Space With Color Accents

Once you’ve created your dominant color scheme, you need accent colors to bring it to life. These little pops of color go a long way in adding interest and banishing the blahs. Even better? With a neutral backdrop, you have the freedom to use bold, vivid accent colors you love that that would clash otherwise.

There are any number of ways you can add color to a neutral room, from small decor accessories, wall art and decorative pillows to furniture pieces like accent chairs and painted tables and chests. If you really want to make a statement, you can even add an accent wall in a bold, yet complementary, color.

Choose no more than two or three accent colors—using too many will lessen the effect. Color temperature balance is also important here. If your dominant colors are warm, accent with cool colors, and vice versa. This will create a nice balance. Ever noticed how often designers pair dark brown with light blue? That’s this principle at work.

Work in Textures

In rooms where there are few variations in color, variations in texture become vital in creating an interesting space. Textured neutral tones appear as different shades and colors depending on how the light hits them. This creates the illusion of added depth and a layered effect.

When decorating a neutral-toned room, think textural contrasts. Plush microfiber with dark wood. Textured fabric with polished metal. Woven seagrass with beachy white canvas slipcovers. A glass tabletop atop a carved wooden base. A wooden plank table with steel legs.

Sleek and shiny surfaces such as metal, gleaming glass, cool marble, and polished dark wood tend to work very well with neutral surroundings. So too do richly textured materials such as beautifully grained wood, woven seagrass, rattan, and reclaimed wood. Think how often you see these materials used in contemporary and modern rooms, which tend towards neutral color palettes.

When incorporating metal furnishings or metal accents, you’ll have the best luck if you stick within the same color temperature as the main room. For example, pewter or silver finishes look amazing with cool neutrals, while bronze or gold finishes pair better with warm neutrals.

Perk Things Up With Patterns

Patterns add movement and interest to a space, and they really “pop” when paired with neutrals. Neutrals also help balance bold prints that might otherwise be too overwhelming. Window treatments, area rugs, throw pillows, and upholstered accent chairs are simple ways to incorporate patterns into your decor.

Want More Decorating Ideas?

Follow us on Facebook for decorating ideas, decor trends, and the latest Wichita Furniture deals. More than anything else in the home, they give a sense of your unique personality. They give a room its heart and soul.

How you accessorize a room will vary according to your personal preferences and decor style. For example, a modern room may have only one or two bold statement pieces, while an eclectic cottage room may have several groupings of decorative items. Here are some basic room accessorizing tips.

Mirror, Mirror

Mirrors not only have decorative value, but they have two special abilities: they add light and create the illusion of added space. Accent mirrors work well in nearly any room, but they’re an especially good choice when you want to make an area appear larger.

Freshen Up with Botanicals

Adding live plants literally breathes life into your decor. They need not be the traditional potted palm or Boston fern. Potted succulents, bamboo, and DIY terrariums are trending, and they have the advantage of being very low maintenance.

If you have a garden (or the budget for the florist,) there is nothing like a cut flower arrangement to make a room feel fresh and welcoming. In the fall and winter, try a bowl of apples or pine cones.

Look Everywhere for Inspiration

When arranged attractively (more on that in a bit,) even the most everyday items can become beautiful displays that reflect your personality. Love to bake? How about accessorizing with vintage kitchen tools and a bowl of cookie cutters? Is gardening your passion? Try a display of old garden tools and seed packets. Old hardback books are inexpensive, add visual interest, and can also be used as platforms to elevate smaller decor items. Comb antique stores, thrift shops, used book stores and yard sales for tons of decorating ideas!

Create Groupings

Arrange accessories in groups, combining items that share a similar color palette, finish, texture or theme. As we discussed in our coffee table styling article, asymmetry adds visual interest. Vary the heights and sizes of grouped items, and go for an odd rather than even number. (You can’t go wrong with the “Rule of 3” for decorating.) If you’re creating a tabletop display, arrange the items in a pyramid, with the tallest object in the back. Similar small items can be kept together on a tray or in a bowl. If you’re creating a wall display of multiple photos, stagger the placements rather than hanging the photos in a straight row.

Add a Pop of Color with Pillows

Decorative pillows add a splash of color and/or a lively pattern without being overwhelming. If there’s a color you love that would be too much as the main color of your walls or upholstery, this is the way to do it. You can use decorative pillows to “pick up” the accent colors of your room and other accessories, creating a cohesive color theme that isn’t too “matchy.” They’re also an inexpensive way to freshen up your room’s color palette with the seasons or as the mood strikes you.

Don’t Go Overboard

Too many knick knacks scattered throughout a room make it feel cluttered and appear smaller. (Not to mention, they collect dust!) The same goes for too many pictures on the wall, or an overabundance of decorative pillows.

Don’t feel as if you must accessorize every available surface. The eye needs open space to rest as it travels through the room. With a product assortment that includes sectionals, umbrellas, firepits and more, we are now your one-stop-shop for every room inside and outside your home. Of course, this patio furniture is comfortable and stylish, but one of the most exciting features of the new collection is the innovative Nuvella Performance Fabric from Ashley.

Exceptional Durability

Nuvella is incredibly durable, and the nature of the yarn makes the fabric successful in combating stains. It’s a 100% solution-dyed fabric (instead of being dipped), so the colors are completely penetrated into the yarn. This means no fading or rubbing out through wear, cleaning, or exposure to the Kansas elements. Your colors will stay bright for years to come!

Easy to Clean

The most impressive characteristic is how easy Nuvella fabric is to clean and maintain. Ashley recommends spot-cleaning stains or spills using warm water and a mild soap. The fabric is resistant to dirt, mold, and mildew, and can even be cleaned with bleach without fading its colors.

Beautiful Color Options

You don’t have to sacrifice appearance for quality and durability. There are a variety of extraordinary colors and options available in the Nuvella line, so you’re sure to find exactly what will look the best on your porch or patio.

Environmentally-Friendly

Unlike traditional dye, no wastewater is generated from the dying process, making Nuvella the eco-friendly solution for your outdoor furniture fabric.

If you enjoy living in your furniture, you'll love our wide assortment of sofas, chairs, sectionals and more that feature Nuvella Performance Fabric. The versatile material is perfect for high-traffic areas, both indoors and out.
urn:store:1:blog:post:2 https://wichitafurniture.com/coffee-and-side-table-styling Coffee and Side Table Styling
Traditional living room table styling usually involves a flower vase in the middle of the coffee table, books underneath, and end tables with lamps on either side of the sofa. Nothing wrong with that—it’s a classic arrangement for a reason. But if you’re wanting to mix things up a bit, here are some coffee and side table styling ideas to get the creative juices flowing.

“Tray” Chic

Decorative trays provide a sturdy and attractive base for table centerpieces. Candles and small vases are natural pairings, but how about displaying a tea service, mini bar, or even a grouping of attractive bottles? Your tray centerpiece can be something that reflects your hobbies and personality, such as art brushes, a calligraphy set, a vintage camera, model cars or planes, or your favorite collectibles. Pick out a few pieces and get creative!

Go Natural

Potted succulent plants and terrariums bring a touch of nature to your tabletops with minimal maintenance. It’s the perfect way to add freshness and vitality to any space. Don’t want to deal with live plants? Try a mini Zen rock garden, woven rattan or seagrass ornaments, or a richly textured wooden bowl for a soothing, natural tablescape.

Head for Cover

Tablecloths aren’t just for the dining table anymore. Covering a coffee table or even a side table with a cloth or throw blanket can add a splash or color, an eye-catching pattern, or sumptuous texture. It has the added bonus of protecting your tabletops from cup rings when people forget to use coasters.

Make a Statement (Piece)

A single statement piece, such as a sculpture or vibrantly colored blown glass vase, adds instant visual interest to a coffee or side table. Less is more here, so don’t crowd the piece with too many other items—give it centerstage and let it do the talking.

Asymmetrical Is Amazing

Varying the heights of your tabletop objects creates balance and visual appeal. Pair a low stack of books with a tall candle stand or vase. Place a grouping of short, square candles on a tray next to a tall finial. Use stacks of books as platforms to elevate small decorative items.

You can also vary shapes to great effect. A square or rectangular book or tray against a circular tabletop looks particularly striking.

Keep It Simple

A minimalist arrangement always looks thoughtful. Try one beautiful coffee table book, placed at an angle from the table edge, paired with a simple monochromatic flower arrangement in a glass vase. Perfect.

Get Creative with Storage

Nothing disrupts your decor like a tangle of charging cords, unread mail, remotes, and general clutter. Thankfully, there are any number of attractive storage options available. Try stacking decorative boxes or baskets on on top or below the table, varying the heights. The boxes can act as platforms for photo frames and knickknacks, too.

You can also choose a coffee table with integrated storage, such as a lift top or drawers. Need more? Try substituting a cocktail storage truck or pyramid truck for a standard coffee table. Large multi-tasking ottomans are taking the place of coffee tables in many homes, providing seating, serving space and storage all in one.

You’re All Set with “Sets”

If you love the look of a coordinated tabletop but don’t want to choose the individual accessories yourself, there are sets available to suit any decor style. Whether you have a largeor small backyard living space, there are a few simple steps you can take to turn it into an entertainment area everyone will enjoy coming to.

Prep Your Grill

Your grill hasn’t been used since last summer and most likely has plenty of caked-on gunk. Clean it by burning off excess food and grease for 15 minutes. Once the grill is no longer hot (but still warm), brush off any loose particles with a steel grill brush. Depending on whether you are using a gas or charcoal grill, make sure you have plenty of fueling supplies to cook enough food for all your guests.

Supply Comfortable Seating

Make sure you have enough seating for all your guests, especially if want them to stay a while. If you don’t have enough patio furniture, you can use folding chairs, benches or stools. Folding chairs can easily be rented for around $2 a piece from a local party rental store. Toss in some brightly colored throw pillows to make the space more festive.

Set the Mood With the Right Lighting

Lighting is not only important for setting the mood but also for safety reasons. If your party is nearing the evening hours, strings lights on the deck or from tree branches. If you have a pool, float tea lights in the water. You can also place candles on the tables, tiki torches around the yard or hand out glow sticks to the kids. Another great option is a fire pit. It’s a great place to gather around and give the party an all around summer vibe.

Keep Pesky Mosquitoes Away

Don’t let mosquitoes crash your summer party, or guests may not stick around ‘til dessert. Here are a few ways to keep those unwanted pests away.

Get rid of standing water. Mosquitoes breed in these areas and after a long rain, the problem could worsen. About a week before the party, empty items like kiddie pools, gutters, storage areas and flowerpots of any standing water.

Keep fans nearby. Mosquitoes tend to be weak flyers, so a fan will easily blow away the annoyance. This idea works best in small areas like around a deck or table. It’s also great for keeping bugs off the potato salad!

Light scented candles. More specifically, light citronella and calendula candles.

Use bug spray or wipes. This is the easiest way to stop mosquitoes in their tracks. Stash a basket of items near the back door (away from the food) for guests to easily access when needed.

Stock a Beverage Station

On a warm day, don’t let your guests walk around empty handed. Set up a beverage station that can be frequently visited and is well stocked with plenty of water and ice. Keep a variety of different drinks to pick from like ice tea, soda, beer, lemonade or mixed drinks.

Offer Entertainment

Every backyard party needs some form of entertainment, like music and games. Stick with the classics when it comes to music (unless you have a specific party theme) and keep the music upbeat with songs that are recognizable. Plan for the playlist to last about five hours. As for the games, try some of the popular ones like Cornhole, Horseshoes, Ladderball or a giant Jenga set. Go the extra mile and set up a photo booth with a fun background.
Now that you have the basics to throwing a great backyard party, you have no excuse not to wow your guests. They may even ask when the next party will be! Here are 5 good reasons to tell your pillow, “It’s not me, it’s YOU.”

#1 It’s Worn Out Its Welcome

Is your pillow leaving you flat? Does it have lumps or bumps, or is there a dent where you lay your head each night? If you have to punch or fluff your pillow to make it comfortable, it’s time to replace it.

Pillows break down over time, and no longer provide the comfort and support they should. A standard inexpensive polyester bed pillow will need to be replaced about every 6 months. Higher quality pillows made of conforming, high-recovery materials (such as memory foam) cost more but are far better suited to a long-term relationship. They usually last about 18-36 months, though some last longer and even have a warranty.

#2 It Isn’t Supportive Enough

Your pillow should cradle and support your head, neck and shoulders in proper alignment. When you’re lying down, it should fill in the gap between your head and shoulders, reducing strain on your neck.

Sleeping on a non-supportive pillow (either because it’s worn out or not a good fit) can be a real pain in the neck—literally! It reduces sleep quality and can lead to stiffness when you wake up, or exacerbate underlying neck and back pain conditions. A supportive pillow, on the other hand, promotes healthy, restful sleep.

#3 It’s Not Your Type

Pillows aren’t one-size-fits-all. Different sleep positions require different pillows for proper support and comfort. The loft, thickness, fill material and support level of the pillow all play a part.

For example, if you sleep on your back, using an overly thick or fluffy pillow can throw your head too far forward during the night. Side sleepers often need more support in order to prevent neck strain. When purchasing a new pillow, the packaging or product description should tell you which sleep positions it’s designed for.

#4 You Feel Smothered

Are you having trouble going to sleep or waking up feeling too warm and “stuffy”—even with the air on? Your pillow could be a factor, trapping heat and not allowing air to circulate.

When you replace your pillow, features like ventilated foams, airflow panels and sweat-wicking fabrics will help regulate temperature to keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night.

#5 It Has Too Much Baggage

Your old pillow can look clean on the surface (no sweat stains, etc) while still hiding dirty little secrets: buildups of body oils, dead skin cells and dust mites. Not only is the “ewwww” factor high, but dust mites are a common allergen.

There are steps you can take to help keep your pillow clean and reduce allergens, such as using a zip-up cover and washing the pillow regularly according to the care label. Eventually, though, there still comes a time when you have to let it go.

You Can Do Better

Just like any relationship, finding the right pillow match takes effort...but it’s worth it. If you’ve decided to break up with your old pillow and are looking for some new possibilities, check out our bed pillow selection. The pillow of your dreams just might be there waiting for you!
urn:store:1:blog:post:5 https://wichitafurniture.com/bedroom-decorating-ideas-for-better-sleep Bedroom Decorating Ideas for Better Sleep
The Better Sleep Council celebrates “Better Sleep Month” each May in an effort to promote awareness of how sleep affects our emotional and physical health. There are countless studies that show getting enough good quality sleep can have a positive impact on our weight, mood, ability to focus, and more. Here are some decorating tips for turning your bedroom into a restful, relaxing sanctuary.

Room Layout

The head of your bed should be located on a solid wall, and the foot of the bed should point away from the door. Choose a bed frame with a head board and/or a foot board for stability, and to elevate the mattress up away from the floor.

Eliminate Distractions

When you’re trying to sleep, the last thing you need is to worry about the pile of laundry you forgot to fold, or the work presentation you still need to finish. Clear all the clutter out of your bedroom, get a pet bed for your furbabies, and keep technology like TVs, laptops and smart phones out of the room, or at least turned off.

Color

Choose soothing, calming colors for the walls and bedding, such as cool blues, purples, and greens.

Temperature

Ideally, you want your bedroom temperature to be 64 – 70°F for the best sleep environment. Installing a ceiling fan in your bedroom can help keep the room cool without adjusting the thermostat for the whole house.

Light

Your body’s circadian rhythm, which is what tells us when it’s time to sleep and wake, is affected by light. Using dimmers and reading lamps in the evening will help you relax and feel sleepy. Installing room-darkening blinds, curtains or shades will help block sunlight and streetlights, so can sleep more soundly.

Mattress

For the best support, experts recommend replacing your mattress every seven years. We spend as much as a third of our lives in bed, so it makes sense to invest in the most comfortable, highest-quality mattress for your budget. We move an average of 40 to 60 times every night, but foam mattresses like Tempur-Pedic eliminate bouncing when your partner changes position, so you can sleep without being disturbed. Top off your bed with high-quality pillows and bedding that’s soft and comfortable.

Reduce Allergens

Even if you don’t have allergies, dust, pet dander, mold, and dust mites can get trapped in carpet, bedding, and pillows, causing sinus irritation that makes sleeping difficult. Changing out your wall-to-wall carpet for wood floors and area rugs will greatly reduce the amount of particles in your room. Using mattress and pillow protectors and allergen-free bedding is also a good way to block these irritants. You can also include a plant or two in your dĂ©cor to help clean the air.
urn:store:1:blog:post:6 https://wichitafurniture.com/how-to-pick-the-perfect-recliner How to Pick the Perfect Recliner
3 Tips for Finding Your New Fortress of Solitude

So...it’s happened at last. Your favorite old recliner (you know, the one held together with duct tape and a prayer) has finally given up the ghost. Or, maybe you’re just looking for some comfy new seating for your family room or den.

No matter your reason for buying a new recliner, we know it’s a very personal decision. After all, it's your haven of rest at the end of a long day. Here are some tips for finding your new favorite chair.

1. Choose the Right Upholstery for Your Lifestyle

Do you have active young kids? A Great Dane who thinks he’s a lapdog? How about a friend who’s none-too-careful with beverages at parties? Life happens, but the right upholstery choice can stand up to what your lifestyle dishes out.

Here’s how some of the most popular recliner upholstery choices stack up:

With its plush feel and sleek looks, it’s easy to see why microfiber is such a favorite. It’s also affordable, durable and stain-resistant, making it a stylish and practical pick for nearly any household.

Noted for their durability, woven cotton and polyester blends stand up well to active kids and pets. They’re available in tons of colors and patterns, too. (Patterns hide a multitude of kitty claw or sippy cup sins.)

If you love leather but it’s not in the budget, vinyls, imitation leathers and bicast leathers give you the look you crave at a much lower price. They tend to wipe clean easily, too, making maintenance a breeze. They don’t have the same durability as full leather, though, and so usually aren’t the best option for households with active pets and kids.

Leather is prized for its style, feel and exceptional durability. Naturally, this comes with a higher price tag, but you can expect years of use with proper care. A lower-cost alternative is leather match. This means that the seating surfaces (which get the most wear and visibility) are leather, while the sides and back are vinyl or less-expensive bonded leather.

2. Reclining Mechanisms: Do You Want to Power Up?

Reclining mechanisms come in two basic types: manual or power. Many of today’s recliner models are available with both options.

Manual recliners use a handle, button, or push-back arms to tilt into a set number of positions. They are the least expensive mechanism type, and work great when you want a basic, comfy chair to kick back in.

Power recliners let you tilt back effortlessly with the touch of a button. Most recline to any position, and some are even programmable, so you’re always at the perfect viewing angle for a Netflix binge. They are more expensive than manual, but you may want the upgrade if it’s a recliner you spend a lot of time in.

When shopping for recliners, you may also see the term “wall recliner” or "wall hugger recliner.” This type of space-saving recliner can be placed much nearer the wall, because the seat unit slides forward as you recline. No more recliners “floating” several feet out from your walls!

3. Consider a Multi-Tasker

These days, even our recliners multi-task. Many chairs not only recline, but swivel, rock and/or glide. You can go from stretching out in front of the TV to rocking a fussy baby in no time flat. Many people also enjoy the soothing rocking or gliding motion while reading or simply relaxing.

A special type of multi-tasker is the lift chair recliner. It not only power reclines, but lifts you gently forward, up and out of the seat. This is helpful for individuals who could use extra assistance getting up out of a deep recliner.

Ready to start shopping for your new favorite chair? Browse our huge selection of recliners online, or stop in to the store and see us.

urn:store:1:blog:post:7 https://wichitafurniture.com/2016-cystic-fibrosis-foundation-great-strides-walk 2016 Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Great Strides Walk
At Wichita Furniture, we believe it’s important to give back to our community, and to support our staff. When buying new furniture, ask your sales rep for the recommended care instructions. Here are some general guidelines for wood furniture care.

Prevent Damage

To keep them looking like new, place wood furnishings out of direct sunlight and away from heat vents. The sun can cause fading, and the heat will dry the wood, causing unsightly cracks.

It’s also a good idea to monitor the humidity level in your house. Humidity lower than 40% can contribute to cracking over time. Too much humidity can also cause problems, as it can lead to wood swelling.

Moisture on the surface can damage wood, too, so use coasters to absorb water from glasses placed on side tables and coffee tables.

Avoid using wood cleaning products such as waxes and polishes on wood furniture, because they can cause damage and build-up.

Dusting

As part of your weekly cleaning routine, dust your furnishings to remove airborne particles that have deposited on the wood. These can build up into a layer of film or lead to scratches. Spray polishes can build up over time and leave the wood looking dull.

To prevent dust from scattering around the room, use a soft, clean, damp cloth or a microfiber dusting cloth. Feather dusters and treated cloths are also good options. For intricate woodwork or tall pieces, try a lamb’s wool duster with a long handle. They’re made with lanolin, which helps hold onto the dust particles.

Wichita Furniture Recommends Montage

Even with regular dusting and proper care, accidents can happen. That’s why we offer Montage to protect your furniture. You can live and use your furniture without worry, because if there is any accidental damage in the first five years, you can get your wood furniture fixed or replaced. Of course, normal wear and tear isn’t covered, but you can have peace of mind that your furnishings will be protected from life’s mishaps.
urn:store:1:blog:post:13 https://wichitafurniture.com/indoor-spring-cleaning-checklist Indoor Spring Cleaning Checklist
Spring is a time of renewal, and it’s a perfect time to do a little deep cleaning to get your furniture, fixtures and floors looking their best and help them last longer. Use a step stool or ladder so you can get high enough to safely reach them, then use a pillowcase or special duster to catch dust and keep it from spreading all around the room.
2. Clean glass globes on overhead light fixtures.
3. Dust all baseboards and wood trim. Cleaning baseboards is an easy way for little ones to help out.
4. Dust all shelves, knick-knacks, lamp shades and picture frames.
5. Vacuum and shampoo carpets.
6. Sweep and mop wood, tile or laminate floors.

Windows
1. Wash windows and glass exterior doors inside and out.
2. Dust blinds and vacuum, wash or dry clean drapes and other window treatments.

That’s it! Now, sit back, relax, and enjoy your fresh, clean home. Repeat this process again in the fall, and it should be easier to keep your home clean all year long.
urn:store:1:blog:post:14 https://wichitafurniture.com/how-to-stage-your-home-for-sale How to Stage Your Home for Sale
When you’re selling your house, potential buyers will be trying to picture their furnishings, dĂ©cor and family in the space. Staging can help your home sell faster, because it showcases all the positive aspects of your home and gets rid of distractions like clutter and personal decorations. Here are a few tips for making your house more appealing to buyers.

1. Take an Objective Look

Perform a walkthrough of your house, trying picture it from the buyer’s perspective. Look for maintenance that needs to be completed and personal photos that need to be packed away. Enlist a friend to give an objective point of view and point out items that should be addressed.

2. Declutter and Downsize

Pack up all the “stuff” covering your shelves and counters. Consider it the start of the moving process! Store extra pieces of furniture to free up space. Leave your closets half empty so they’ll look roomy and buyers can see there’s plenty of storage.

3. Clean from Top to Bottom

Deep clean or hire a service to do it for you. Buyers will be looking in every corner, opening all the closets, and they’ll notice any cobwebs and dirt.

4. Switch to a Neutral Style

Potential buyers may not have the same taste as you, so think clean, fresh and neutral. Shabby chic, industrial, modern, country, and other styles can be toned down to be more generally appealing.

5. Master Bedroom

A master bedroom should appeal to both sexes, so make sure it’s not too dark or frilly. Make the bed with an attractive comforter set, and store furniture you don’t need to help the room look bigger.

6. Living Room

Replace or get rid of dated, torn furniture and décor. A few new throw pillows and an area rug with a modern design will give the room a quick update. Staging the family room around a TV will help buyers picture where their own television and furniture would fit.

7. Dining Room

Make sure each room is furnished for the appropriate purpose. For example, if you converted your dining room into a playroom, move the toys somewhere else and stage the room with a dining set before listing. Consider setting the table to make the room more inviting.

8. Bathroom

Make the bathroom shine and keep the toilet lid down. Empty the trash and put out fresh towels before showings.

9. Exterior

Potential buyers see the outside of your home first, often even before they even schedule a showing. Make sure the front door is painted and working properly, mow the lawn, and keep the bushes trimmed.

Now you have a clean, decluttered, neutral-style home that’s ready for a new owner. Good luck, and happy selling!
urn:store:1:blog:post:8 https://wichitafurniture.com/sofa-and-sectional-buying-guide Sofa and Sectional Buying Guide
When shopping for new seating for your living or family room, you may considering a sectional or a sofa and loveseat combo. These tips will help you decide between the two, and know what to look for when making your purchase.

Which One is Right for You?

Depending on your family size, amount of available space, and room configuration, most rooms can work with either a sofa or a sectional, so the decision is ultimately up to your preference. Even in a small living or family room, a sectional made up of a loveseat and chaise adds extra seating without taking up much space. If you want versatility, a sofa can be paired with a loveseat and/or chairs and arranged however you wish.

Things to Know When Buying a Sofa or a Sectional

Measure First – Before you even begin shopping, take measurements of the room you’ll be using the sofa or sectional in. As you’re measuring, consider the depth of the seats, and the length of the entire piece, including the arms. Keep in mind, a curved-corner sectional will take up more room than a square corner one.

Seat Cushions – Low-density foam cushions are soft and inexpensive, but high-density foam is firmer and will hold its shape longer. Hybrid and coil cushions offer even more support and durability.

Back Cushions – Pillow backs have removable cushions, and tight back styles have the cushions attached to the frame. Pillow back cushions can be cleaned or moved for sleeping, but can lose their shape over time if you don’t fluff them. Attached cushions won’t shift around, but can eventually become worn.

Upholstery – There are many grades of leather and fabric available, so you can choose from durable, easy-to-clean materials or high-end looks.

Designs – Stationary sofas and sectionals don’t move, while reclining or motion furniture reclines. Sleeper models have pull-out beds.

Sectional Specifics

Terminology – As the name implies, if a section has the arm on your right when you’re facing it, that’s called right arm facing (RAF). If it’s on your left, that’s called left arm facing (LAF). This is important, because you need to ensure your pieces will fit together correctly in your room.

Components – There are several types of sections you may see, including chair, corner chair, loveseat, chaise, and sofa. They may be armless or have left-facing or right-facing arms.

Price – Generally, sectionals with fewer pieces are priced lower. Of course, this means you’re also more limited in layout and configuration options.

Shapes – A standard sectional that’s L-shaped looks like two sofas, loveseats, or one of each that have been put together to form a corner. They work well for watching TV, especially if the L-shape is formed with a sofa or loveseat and a chaise. A curved sectional is similar, but the corner section has a curved back instead of square. Keep in mind, this style doesn’t leave much leg room for whoever sits in the corner, and they work best floating in the room instead of against walls. A U-shaped sectional looks like three sofas connected at the corners, but can also be formed with a chaise at one or both ends. This is a great choice for conversation areas, because everyone can see each other.

Whether you choose a sectional, sofa, loveseat, or chairs, Wichita Furniture can help you find the perfect pieces to fit your room, lifestyle and budget.
urn:store:1:blog:post:9 https://wichitafurniture.com/adjustable-bed-buying-guide Adjustable Bed Buying Guide
In recent years, people of all ages have been buying power bases to make their beds adjustable. Why? Because they can help you sleep better, get relief from chronic pain and health conditions, and make it easier to sit up in bed comfortably to work, watch, TV, or eat.

Curious if an adjustable bed is right for you? Here are a few things to consider:

Benefits of an Adjustable Bed Base

Today’s adjustable bases look like a regular bed frame, making them a stylish addition to any bedroom. But hospitals have used adjustable beds for years, because they allow you to get into positions that can improve your health and relieve common medical conditions. Now, you can enjoy these same benefits at home by adding a power bed base to your standard bed:

Open airways to reduce snoring and help those with sleep apnea or asthma.

Elevate legs to improve circulation for people with diabetes or arthritis.

Elevate head to keep stomach acid out of your esophagus if you have acid reflux or heartburn.

Raising or lowering different parts of the body can reduce pressure points and low back pain.

Sleep in a “zero-gravity” position and feel like you’re sleeping on air.

Sit up in bed to watch TV, read, eat, or work on your laptop.

How to Buy an Adjustable Power Bed

When you’re ready to start shopping for a new power base for your bed, here are a few things to consider.

First, find the right mattress. Most adjustable bases can be used with different types of mattresses, so make sure you choose the best, most comfortable mattress for your sleep style and body type.

Second, choose a reputable brand. At Wichita Furniture, we carry adjustable power bases by Sealy and Tempur-Pedic, because they’re made from durable, quality parts that will last for years.

Third, test the base. Just like when you’re buying a mattress, you’ll want to get on the bed and try adjusting it to different positions. Test all the features that come with the model you’re considering.

Fourth, understand the warranty. Adjustable bases have moving parts, so take the time to discuss the warranty with your salesperson so you understand what’s covered, and for how long.

Interested in upgrading your bed’s standard boxspring? Kids are constantly moving and growing, and all that activity means they need a lot of good-quality rest. According to the National Sleep Foundation, preschoolers need as much as 12 hours of sleep per day, grade school-age kids need up to 11 hours, and teens should sleep 8 – 10 hours every night.

Most children graduate to a “big bed” around age three. Selecting the right mattress from the beginning helps them sleep better and supports their growing bones and body. Here are some things to consider when shopping for a mattress for your child’s bed:

1. Buy a New Mattress

It may be tempting to save money by handing down your old mattress to your child or buying a gently used one, but a worn-out mattress will not provide enough support for his or her spine. A mattress should last 7 – 10 years, so buying new ensures your son or daughter will have a supportive mattress through many stages of growth.

2. Find the Right Size

If you’re buying a mattress for a five-year-old, remember they’ll grow rapidly over the next few years. Full or Queen-size mattresses are big enough to last most kids through the teen years, and still be used on visits home during and after college. If space is limited, consider an extra-long twin size.

3. Test it Out

When you’re in the store, your child’s idea of testing out a mattress may involve lots of bouncing and climbing up and down, but you’ll want to feel for yourself how much support it gives. Lay on the mattress for a few minutes, just as if you were considering a purchase for your own bed. If it’s uncomfortable for you, it’s probably going to feel the same way for your child.

4. Make Sure it’s Supportive

For the sake of your child’s spine and bone growth, it’s best to invest in a mattress that offers a lot of support. Both innerspring coils and high-quality memory foam are comfortable and supportive.

5. Select One that Will Last

It can be tempting to buy the most inexpensive mattress you can find for a kids’ bed, but keep in mind that you usually get what you pay for. A quality mid-priced mattress will usually offer better durability and last longer than a cheap model.

6. Protect the Mattress

Prevent stains and block dust mites and allergens with a mattress protector. Choose one with a waterproof barrier in case of spills and nighttime accidents.

Wichita Furniture offers a specialty memory foam mattress for kids, as well as a wide selection of full and Queen sets. There are many studies showing a psychological connection between color and mood, so consider how the color will make you, your family and your guests feel when they’re in your home.

While each person’s preferences and tastes are unique, most of us are affected in similar ways by the different colors:

Red

A stimulating color, red can actually cause physical changes like increased appetite, adrenaline, heart rate, and respiration. This makes it a less desirable color for bedrooms, where relaxing colors are preferred. Red is a great choice for entryways and dining rooms, however, because it makes a bold impression, draws attention, and can create energy and excitement.

Blue

On the opposite side of the mood spectrum, blue has a calming, sedating effect. It can even slow respiration and heart rate. Create a soothing, relaxing feel in a bedroom or bathroom by pairing softer pastel blues with warm tones to prevent making the room feel to stark and cool. Deeper shades like midnight blue or indigo will add mystery to a room, but should be balanced with lighter colors to prevent a sad, melancholy feeling.

Green

Perhaps because of its close association with nature, green evokes feelings of renewal, balance, and calm. It’s considered to be restful for the eyes and can even help relieve stress. Green is suitable for nearly any room in your home where you want to create an atmosphere of warmth, comfort, and relaxation.

Black

Black is a dramatic color with a powerful feel. Depending how you use black in your décor, you can create an air of danger and mystery, or elegance and formality. Many decorators advise limiting its use to small doses in an effort to avoid creating feelings of sadness. However, a larger dose of black can create an endless feeling that actually make a room seem bigger instead of closed off.

Orange

Another exciting color, orange can create feelings of energy and enthusiasm. It’s often associated with creativity, but not everyone loves it. Coppery colors are gaining popularity in decorating, and orange blends well with neutrals, so it’s worth considering. There are a variety of hues available, ranging from cool peach to warm terra cotta or pumpkin.

Pink

Pink is a calming color, especially when mixed with neutrals like gray or brown. It blends red’s excitement with white’s purity, evoking feelings of innocence, romance, and sweetness. Women in particular connect with this color, because it reminds them of the joy of their youth. These are all reasons why pink tones are frequently chosen for girls’ bedrooms.

Purple

Dark purple tones like eggplant are commonly associated with wealth and royalty, so they can give a more luxurious feel to a home. Deep purple tones, favored by preteen girls, tend to stimulate creativity, so they’re not a restful choice for a bedroom. Light lavender shades can feel cool and uninviting, so choosing use a shade with red or blue undertones, like red-violet or a lavender gray, will make people more comfortable.

Yellow

Using soft yellows in a kitchen, bathroom, dining room or hall can evoke feelings of happiness and energy, as well as stimulate imagination and creativity. However, too much yellow in a room can have the opposite effect, producing feelings of anger and frustration. Studies have shown that babies tend to cry more and people lose their temper more in yellow rooms.

Gray

Gray is a sophisticated, sleek neutral that exudes feelings of wisdom, knowledge, intellect, trust, and authority, , For a long time, the only shades available for the home were industrial or battleship grays that felt cold and impersonal, so they were used less frequently. They’re more popular today, because many grays have blue or brown tones that will look great with nearly any color you choose.

Brown

Warm brown tones, like chocolate and espresso, create feelings of togetherness, reliability, intimacy, and approachability. Rooms with deep brown colors tend to seem safe, cozy, and snug, like our own personal cocoon. Rich browns are great for family rooms and living rooms, where people will be gathering for conversation and socializing.

White

Painting walls white can be considered plain or boring, but it’s a good way to create feelings of cleanliness, purity, and renewal. When choosing paint colors, you’ll find that most whites have undertones like gray, pink, yellow, green or blue. While not true whites, these colors can help prevent a room from feeling stark and cold.

A Final Thought on Color and Mood

While knowing the general psychology of each color is helpful in creating the right atmosphere for your home, keep in mind that you can create different moods by choosing lighter or darker shades and adding complementary colors. Neutrals like white, gray, black and brown can be your best friend, because you can use them to calm down bright colors. By the same token, adding splashes of deeper or brighter colors can liven up otherwise neutral rooms.
urn:store:1:blog:post:17 https://wichitafurniture.com/how-to-buy-the-perfect-mattress-in-4-easy-steps How to Buy the Perfect Mattress in 4 Easy Steps

So, you’ve finally decided it’s time to ditch that old, uncomfortable mattress. Good for you! If you’re wondering how to choose the best brand, how much you should expect to spend, and how to decide what will feel most comfortable, we can help. These tips will help you save time and get the best mattress for your needs and budget.

Not sure if it’s time to start shopping? Here are some signs it’s time to get rid of your old mattress.

1. Choose the size you need

Whether you’re replacing an old mattress or buying a completely new sleep set for a guest room, child, or teenager, getting the right size is critical. The bed has to fit the person(s) who’ll be sleeping on it. Choose a mattress that’s long enough that the tallest person’s feet won’t dangle off the end of the bed, and wide enough for a person (or two) to lay down with their arms folded behind their head without hanging off the sides of the mattress (or touching the other person’s elbows). Two adults will need at least a Queen.

It seems kind of obvious, but remember to make sure the bed won't be too big for the space. (Yes, it happens.)
Mattress sizes (width x length):
Twin – 39” x 75”
Twin XL – 39” x 80”
Full / Double – 54” x 75”
Queen – 60” x 80”
King – 76” x 80”
California King – 72” x 84”

2. Decide on a budget

Before heading to the store, think about how much you’re comfortable spending on your new mattress or sleep set. Since most people only buy a mattresses every 10 years or so, it helps to do a little research on prices first, so you have reasonable expectations for what you’ll be able to afford.

As with so many other things, you generally get what you pay for when it comes to mattresses. A higher quality sleep set will provide better support, feel more comfortable, and last longer. Unless it’s for a bed that won’t get used much, like in a guest room, you’ll want to choose a mattress that will last for 8 – 10 years of nightly use. Most stores run frequent sales and specials on mattresses that can help you get more for your money, so be sure to ask about those.

One thing to consider as you think about a budget is using the store’s financing, if available. Many times, you can take advantage of special finance offers from top-quality mattress brands like Tempur-Pedic. At Wichita Furniture, you can complete a financing application on our Website before heading over to our store.

3. Think about the features you want

When you get to the store, one of the first questions your sales associate will ask is your preferred comfort level. You may not know what you want at first, and that’s ok. The level of comfort is basically how firm or soft the mattress is:

A firm mattress will feel more solid than soft because the surface doesn’t “give” very much.

A plush mattress is a bit softer and has a little more “give” than a firm mattress, but not as much as a pillow top.

A pillow top mattress has supportive softness, so there’s enough firmness that you don’t completely sink down into it.

A contoured mattress conforms to your body as you sink down into it, providing just the right amount of firmness and softness.

A personalized mattress is one you can customize to your individual preferences and body type.

Your Wichita Furniture sleep expert will ask you a few questions to help determine your ideal comfort level and mattress type, such as whether you’re a side sleeper or back sleeper, if you snore, if you toss and turn a lot, or if you have any chronic pain.

Other features to consider

This is also a good time to think about getting a new bed frame, pillows, and a mattress protector. An adjustable or power base will allow you to raise and lower the head and/or feet of your new bed, which can help with conditions like sleep apnea and low back pain, or just make it easier to watch TV while laying in bed.

Delivery is another important question. When you shop at Wichita Furniture, you can get next day delivery for mattress sets. We’ve got a courteous, professional delivery team and the largest fleet in the Wichita area. And, we have online truck tracking, so you’ll know exactly when to expect your new furniture.

4. Try them out

Okay, you’ve determined the size, price range and comfort level of your ideal mattress. Now it’s time to head to the store and try some out! Yes, you’ll have to go lay on a mattress. In a store. In front of people. For about 20 minutes. It might feel strange, but don't worry, it’s not. Whether you’re going for a clean, modern look or a more eclectic feel, try a few of these ideas to create the look you want.

Mix Things Up
Change up the orientation of the books with a mix of vertical arrangements and horizontal stacks. Place decorative objects on top of the horizontal books to give them more emphasis. Try varying the heights of your books or arranging from tallest to shortest.

Arrange Books by Color
If you don’t have a large book collection, try sorting them in groups by color. This can make a big impact on white shelves.

Use Decorative Objects
Break up your books with pieces like vases, sculptural pieces, boxes, or favorite mementos. If your books are arranged by color, try color-coordinating your objects, too.

Incorporate Nature
Organic elements like rocks, plants, or seashells add contrast to stacks or rows of books. Try placing small shells or stones in jars for a more collective feel.

Don’t Forget Bookends
This is a great way to display favorite pieces and add personality to your shelves. Consider using framed photos or heavy bowls, vases, or other pottery to keep books upright.

Use Baskets and Boxes
Not only will you have a place to stash odds and ends you don’t want cluttering up your shelves, you’ll have additional design elements to work with. Woven baskets can add interesting texture, and colorful or patterned boxes can complement the design of the rest of the room.

Add Artwork
Depending on the size of your shelves, you can place large art pieces behind smaller books and objects, or even hang prints on the front of the shelves.

Use Empty Space
You don’t have to fill every square inch of every shelf. Empty space gives the eye a chance to res, and favorite art pieces or sculptures will stand out more if they’re alone on a shelf.
urn:store:1:blog:post:18 https://wichitafurniture.com/how-far-apart-should-furniture-be-spaced How Far Apart Should Furniture be Spaced?
Whether you’re rearranging a room, buying a new couch or upgrading your bedroom set, this helpful guide will help you determine how much space you’ll need between pieces of furniture. That way, you can create a functional layout that’s not too cramped.

All Rooms

Walkways should be at least 2 feet wide, so make sure furniture doesn’t cramp doorways or hallways, and that there’s plenty of room for traffic to flow through areas like the family or dining room.

Leave at least one inch between the backs of furniture and the walls to prevent damage to both.

Room-size area rugs should be 12-18 inches away from the walls on each side in a small room, or two feet in a larger room. To calculate the correct rug size, subtract 24-36 inches from the room’s length and width, or subtract four feet for large rooms.

Place the front legs of a couch or chair on small area rugs, so they don’t feel like mats randomly scattered around the room.

Living and Family Rooms

If you will have a couch or chair facing a TV, they should be seven to eight feet apart for best viewing.

When two pieces of seating furniture are facing each other, they should be about 3 œ feet apart.

Leave about 16 inches between a coffee table and a couch, to allow plenty of leg room. Choose a table that’s within about four inches of the sofa’s height.

Select end tables that are about the same height as the arm of the couches or chairs they will be placed next to.

Dining Room

Area rugs in dining rooms should extend about three feet beyond the table on all sides to allow room to pull chairs out.

A hanging light or chandelier can be anywhere from 24 to 32 inches above the table’s surface. It should obstruct anyone’s view while they’re seated around the table.

Avoid banged up walls and keep diners comfortable by leaving at least two feet between a dining chair and a wall. That will allow enough room to walk behind and pull out the chair.

Chairs should be spaced about two feet apart.

When space allows, place the dining table about four feet from the room’s entrance.

Test it Out

Rather than dragging pieces of heavy furniture back and forth across a room to test different layouts, you can measure each piece’s length and width, then tape sheets of newspaper together to get the correct size and create a template for each sofa, chair, loveseat, table or cabinet. Then, you can easily move the paper templates around the room to see how well they fit the space. Since furniture showrooms are quite large, this is also a great way to visualize how a new piece of furniture will look in your home, and if it will fit through doorways, up or down stairs, and around tight corners.
urn:store:1:blog:post:19 https://wichitafurniture.com/is-it-time-for-a-new-mattress Is it Time for a New Mattress?
Do you know how old your mattress is? If not, the odds are good that you need a new one. We spend a third of our lives in bed, so sleeping on a worn-out mattress can have a big impact on our well-being.

A mattress can last anywhere from 5 – 10 years, depending on the quality and how often it’s used. Even if your mattress feels comfortable, it may not be giving your body the support it needs. There are many studies showing the effects sleep deprivation and poor quality sleep have on our health, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, depression, weight gain and more. While it won’t fix every sleep disorder, a good night’s sleep starts with your mattress and foundation.

Here are some signs it’s time to get rid of your old mattress

Some signs are obvious, like lumps, holes, or sagging, but even if your mattress looks okay, it could still be past its prime. Over time, our bodies need different levels of comfort and support, and mattresses wear out and lose their ability to meet those needs.

If you notice you’re tossing and turning more than usual, or waking up several times a night for no reason, it could be your bed. Waking up every day with stiff, sore joints, numbness, or an aching back can be a sign that your old mattress is no longer doing its job. If you find yourself frequently nodding off on the couch in front of the TV, it could mean that you’re not sleeping well or that the couch is more comfortable than your bed. With that said, if you sleep better when you’re not in your bed, like at a hotel or a relative’s house, it’s probably time for a change.

Ready for a change?

If you’re ready for a new mattress, the sleep experts at Wichita Furniture, home of Furniture on Consignment, can help you find the right sleep set for your needs and budget. When choosing a rug, there’s more to consider than just color and pattern, so this guide will help you determine which size and shape will work best with your room layout.

Standard Sizes for Area Rugs

When you’re shopping for the perfect area rug for your space, you’ll have a few common sizes to choose from. Square and round rugs are typically 4’, 6’, or 8’, while rectangular rugs are typically 2’x3’, 4’x6’, 5’x8’, 6’x9’, 8’x10’, 9’x12’, and 12’x14’, but those sizes can vary by a foot or two.

Recommended Rug Sizes and Shapes

As a general rule, an area rug that’s covering the majority of the floor should be between six inches and two feet from the walls of the room. Rectangular and square rugs work well in most situations, but if you have a round dining table or curved sofa, a round rug will be a nice complement to the shape.

Using Area Rugs in the Living Room

If you have hard-surface flooring in your living or family room, you may want an area rug for noise reduction and adding warmth and comfort under bare feet. Even if the floor is carpeted, a well-chosen area rug can help define a conversation area or add style and personality to a room. Depending on the size of the room and the layout of your furniture, you’ve got several options:

Furniture all the way on the rug

This is a classic option that works whether your furniture is floating in the room or placed against a wall. It’s also a great way to pull a room full of differently-styled pieces together. In this layout, your area rug will need to be big enough to fit all the legs of each piece of furniture on it without being cramped. Not sure how far apart to place your furniture? Check out our furniture spacing guide. An easy way to find the right rug size for this situation is to use masking tape to make a border around the grouping, then measure the box you’ve created.

Furniture halfway on the rug

Placing only the front legs of your major furniture pieces on an area rug also unifies a layout, and it creates a focal point by directing the eye to the center of the grouping. Each piece doesn’t have to be lined up around the rug, however. Try different combinations, like putting the couch completely on the rug and the side tables only halfway on. Put an old bed sheet on the floor to help find the look you want and make measuring easy.

Furniture completely off the rug

In a small room, placing the coffee table on the area rug and all the other furniture around the edges can help anchor the space. In this case, your area rug should be at least as long as your couch, if not a little longer. Even though the furniture will be off the rug, keep them close to its edges so the grouping feels connected. To find the rug size and furniture layout you want, tape sheets of paper together and use them as a template.

Using an Area Rug in the Dining Room

Whether you have an eat-in kitchen or a formal dining room, an area rug can add personality and define the space. In the dining area, the table and all chairs should fit completely on the rug, even when your guests pull their chairs out. Choose a rug that matches the shape of your dining set, whether it’s round, square or rectangle, and a size that’s at least 2 feet bigger on each side. You may need a larger rug if there’s a pattern in the middle that would be covered by the table.

Bedroom Layout with an Area Rug

Create a cozy look for your bedroom and a warm landing spot for your feet with a large area rug. Even if your room is small, there are a couple of different options that can work.

Rug under the bed and nightstands

In this case, the rug should be long enough to extend from the wall at the head of the bed to at least 12-28 inches past the foot of the bed, and wide enough to extend past the nightstands, or two to three feet on both sides of the bed.

Rug under part of the bed

You can get by with a smaller area rug by placing it in front of the nightstands instead of underneath them. Again, choose a size that’s two or three feet wider than your bed on both sides, and long enough to extend about 18 inches beyond the foot of the bed.

Rug beside the bed

Small rugs or runners can be used beside the bed as a more affordable way to give your feet a warm, soft spot to land in the mornings.

Using Rugs or Runners in Entryways and Hallways

Greeting your guests with a bold colored or patterned rug can create a welcoming feel for your home, and a runner creates a visual guide through a hallway. In the entryway, try using a round area rug. When selecting a runner, pick a size that’s narrower than the hall, and as long as possible while still leaving space at either end. If there’s furniture in the hallway, it should stay off the rug, so choose a narrower size that will fill the walkway.

At Wichita Furniture, we carry a variety of stylish area rugs to suit any style. Browse our area rug selection online, or shop in person at our store.
